Vimy Ridge Canadian Heritage Tour 2017 will proceed and Canadian Nationalism Tour 2017 is added

Over the last few weeks, the Black Gold Regional Division No. 18 Board of Education held engagement meetings regarding the Vimy Ridge Canadian Heritage Tour 2017 for parents and students and collected feedback through an online survey.

    Survey results are:

    Parent Survey – 131 respondents

    • 77.1% Board should PROCEED with the trip
    • 22.9% Board should CANCEL the trip

    Student Survey – 86 respondents

    • 89.5% Board should PROCEED with the trip
    •  10.5% Board should CANCEL the trip

At its regular Board meeting on May 25, 2016 the Board reaffirmed their support for the Vimy Ridge Canadian Heritage Tour 2017 by voting in favour of the trip proceeding in 2017 to Europe. Safety and the risks associated with student travel were at the forefront of the Board’s conversation. The Board thanks parents and students for their participation.

    Canadian Nationalism Tour added

As a result of the feedback received the Board decided that the Division will organize a second trip within Canada that will follow the spirit of the Vimy trip. The Canadian Nationalism Tour 2017 will occur at the same time as the Vimy Ridge Heritage Tour 2017. All monies, including fundraised dollars and the travel insurance premium are 100% transferable to the Canadian Nationalism Tour 2017.

We are currently in the planning phase of the Canadian Nationalism Tour 2017 and will share details with parents and students as they become available in the next week or two. Parents of those students who are currently registered for the Vimy Ridge Heritage Tour 2017 will have the opportunity to decide whether they want their child to remain on the Vimy Ridge Canadian Heritage Tour 2017 travelling to Europe or transfer to the Canadian Nationalism Tour 2017. All Black Gold students enrolled in grades 9 – 11 can still join either trip. The Canadian Nationalism Tour 2017 itinerary will be posted as soon as possible and all registrations must be completed by June 30, 2016.

Should circumstances related to the safety and well being of students change, the Board reserves the right to review all travel. The Board recognizes that parents/guardians are the ultimate authority when it comes to their children’s safety.
