Partnership

University of Alberta/Black Gold Regional Schools Research Partnership:
This research project was the result of several brainstorming sessions (2001 to 2003) involving a number of key people from the Faculty of Medicine (University of Alberta), Edmonton Regional Health Authority and Black Gold Regional Schools. From 1996 to 2001, Dr. Paul Wozny performed a number of cardiovascular assessment experiments with his students in the SciTech - Students as Scientists and Engineers optional science program. These initial experiments led to further development of a detailed cardiovascular research protocol. This cardiovascular assessment protocol (first of its kind in Canada) includes the team of:

1.     Dr. Richard Lewanczuk, (MD, PhD, Director of Endocrinology, University of     Alberta),

2.     Dr. Paul Wozny, (MEd, EdD Principal, Leduc Junior High)

3.     Dr. Jon McGavock, (Associate Professor, Children's Health, University of Manitoba)

4.     Mr. Brian Torrance, (MSc, University of Alberta, Department of Medicine)

5.     Support team of Post-Doctoral Researchers (University of Alberta),

6.     Black Gold Regional School Division

7.     Alberta Learning

A research protocol was established along with grant supports and technical support. Further support by AISI (Alberta Initiative for School Improvement) staff brought this world-class research project into reality. This team effort will provide critical data on the cardiovascular health of our youth in Alberta. Moreover, strategies to improve cardiovascular health will be implemented and monitored for efficacy.
