Hello My Name Is...

The purpose of this assignment is to prepare a short autobiographyThis will enable you to inform others in your class about yourself.  You will also be able to read about your fellow English 10-1 students and get to know them through reading their pages.

Who are you?  Your homepage should give the reader a sense of who you are--not necessarily what you look like, but the person you are inside.

bulletWhat are your main characteristics?
bulletWhat are your hopes and dreams?
bulletWhat's the story of your life?

Jot some ideas on paper in any form.  You may wish to create a thought web or mind map before you begin. Once you have your ideas on paper, you will use them to write a composition of about 200 words describing yourself.  Keeping your description this short may be a challenge, but brevity is a challenge all writers face.  Choose your words carefully and be sure to proof read, spell-check, and edit.  Aim to communicate a sense of "who you are" to the reader. Use the Composition Rubric to analyze your writing.

Once your composition is complete, you are to use MS Publisher to create a homepage that will represent the essential "you." Publisher is an easy program to learn and it will provide lots of guidance as you put together your ideas. You can illustrate your hompage by inserting graphics and images. You may add linked pages if you need the extra space.

The story will be read by the other members of your class; therefore, you have the purposes of  socializing and informing while you write.  You may be entertaining your audience with this story.  You may learn something about yourself while writing this story--that is the purpose of self-discovery.  You can see that text creation may fulfill several purposes at once. Keep your own purpose in mind while you write!

Remember that you are sharing your sense of who you are with your audience.   Where have you been?  Who are you?  What has happened in your life?  What information do you want to share?  What do you want to leave out?   Read the example below.

The Many Adventures of Me, Myself and I

It was a dreary November night when our story begins.  A haggard pregnant woman stumbled into the Emergency Ward of the Calgary Foothills Hospital and cried,
"I've been in labor for 30 hours and my baby is 3 weeks overdue!" In no time, the staff had the woman out of her misery (or so she thought at the time) as they delivered a squalling hungry baby boy into the world.  Burton Bryson was born.
High on a windy rocky hill was the home in which the child was raised.   It's rooms held many mysteries and opportunities for disaster.  The hearth around the fireplace was the setting of many wounds and gashes, and the long staircase from hall to cellar was the path to a broken nose for our hero-a small child on his Fisher Price car, propelled from the rear by older brother Jethro on his unsuccessful death mission. The streets leading up to the house held their own dangers- ice, careening vehicles,  rabid dogs, and enemies from the nearby school.
Despite these many obstacles, our hero lived to tell his tale.  A large and clumsy lad, with a heart of gold, a love of the great outdoors and a tendency to enrage others with his witty, yet critical comments, Burton thrived in the City of Non-Champions.  His prowess in the area of hiking is revered by his family, particularly for the time he wandered off after a squirrel near Lake Louise and spent the night under a bush at the tender age of five, only to be rescued by a busload of Japanese tourists.
At the present time, Burton works nights at the Keg as an "appy chef," (he puts the appetizers on plates) and attends the E.C. Manning High School during the day.  He hopes to graduate in record time and attend Mount Royal College's School of Broadcast Journalism and eventually get a job with the BBC World Service, reporting on military coups around the world.
