Critical Challenge
Remembering the Aztecs
by Jacqueline MacDonald and Terra Kaliszuk

A. Identify historical artifacts that represent Aztec beliefs as related to the elements of worldview.
B. Determine which artifacts best represent the Aztec worldview.
Task
You have been chosen to create a presentation celebrating an important anniversary of the Aztec culture in Mexico. You will present to a group of tourists who may not be educated about the Aztec culture or their worldview, so you will have to take your audience into account when designing your presentation. Design a PowerPoint presentation showing how Aztec artifacts represent the 7 elements of the Aztec worldview:
| view of human nature | |
| view of the good life | |
| equality with others | |
| responsibilities to others | |
| relationship between the individual and the state | |
| relationship of humans with nature | |
| sources of ethical wisdom. |

Process
Step #1 – Review the collection of pictures provided; these pictures are a series of artifacts that may or may not be of Aztec origin. First, identify which artifacts are of Aztec origin – these will be the artifacts you will use to complete this critical challenge.
Step #2 – Use the “Selecting Artifacts” graphic organizer to organize your information. Choose ONE artifact for each aspect of the Aztec worldview. Remember, the artifact MUST represent that part of the Aztec worldview, rather than just selecting pictures at random.
Step #3 – Compose your PowerPoint, completing the following criteria:
|
Plan an attention-catching start to your PowerPoint (use a hook at the beginning – question, interesting fact, comic that relates to your presentation.
|
Include an introduction of background information about the Aztec culture to help your audience fully appreciate your presentation.
|
Include ALL information in your “Selecting Artifacts” graphic organizer. Each artifact choice MUST be logically justified and show your complete knowledge of the Aztec worldview.
|
Organize your PowerPoint so that it is easy for your audience to follow. |
Step #4 – Self-assess your PowerPoint presentation using the rubric provided (hint: the rubric is out of order!).
