Through the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI), Black Gold Regional Schools (BGRS) are working towards engaging students through improved instruction.
"AISI uses Alberta Education dollars that are designated to school jurisdictions for instructional improvement and with that money you have to come up with a proposal for projects," said Denise Harrison, AISI coordinator.
BGRS employs five instructional coaches to work, either one-on-one or in small groups, with classroom teachers: they are Steve Trueman, Terra Kaliszuk, Greg Luchak, Mike Skoreyko and Kim Epp.
The division sets goals based on a three-year cycle. Assessment was the focus of the last cycle; now, in the second year of the current cycle, coaches are using the GREATEST Project (Growing, Reflecting and Assessing Together Empowering Students) with English students and the CLASSE Project (Collaboration liant l'apprentissage et les strategies scolaires efficacies or Collaboration linking study and efficient scholastic skills) with French Immersion students. (Both projects share similar goals but the CLASSE project has an emphasis on improving conversational French language skills.)
