Emerge One to One Project Wins Premier's Award

On September 9, Alberta Education in partnership with 20 school jurisdictions, were the Bronze recipients of the Premier’s Award of Excellence.  Black Gold Regional Division No. 18 is one of the participating school jurisdictions and our participating
school is Covenant Christian School.  Our Emerge project involved all the students in grades 5-9, along with six teachers. Each year approximately 100-110 students participated, with the majority of them staying with the program for the length of the project. In addition, during the past three years, the teaching staff remained stable with five of the six teachers participating
for all three years. The Division purchased full-sized HP laptops and within one week of the project’s start, the students
took their computers home on a daily basis. This continued throughout, and considering this heavy use and daily transport,
we were pleased with the durability of the computers. In the first year of the project, Division
office provided intense support. Key assistance was provided in two areas: hardware, infrastructure and technical support
as well as curricular technology integration support. Without either of these support structures, the success of the project
would have been greatly decreased. After the first year, the project was running smoothly and our level of support fell in
line with that provided to the other schools in the Division. In terms of scope of the project, the laptops were used in every
subject taught at grades 5-9. Initially our focus was going to be on the core subjects, but as the same teachers taught non-core as well, it was natural for them to use the laptops in all subjects.
