Ministry of Education Annual Report 2010 - 11

Earlier today, the Ministry of Education released its Annual Report for 2010/2011. The report contains performance measurement results and information on the ministry’s accomplishments and financial statements for 2010/2011. The report is available online at http://education.alberta.ca/department/annualreport.aspx .
For the second time, the report includes results for self-identified First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) students under a separate goal. There is public interest in the achievement of this growing student population.
Performance highlights include the following:
Public and stakeholder satisfaction with the quality of education remains high.
- Overall satisfaction that students are receiving a solid grounding in core subjects is also high.
- The post-secondary transition rate has remained stable at approximately 59 per cent.
- The five-year high school completion rate appears to have levelled off at 79 per cent, while the dropout rate appears to be gradually improving. The dropout rate is now approximately four per cent.
- Provincial Achievement Test and Diploma Examination results are not included in the report due to the change in the report’s release date from September to June.
- While some measures for FNMI students have shown an improvement this year, we recognize there are still areas for improvement. One example is that there has been a significant one-year improvement in the FNMI dropout rate – although at 10.4 per cent, it is still more than twice the rate for all students in the province.
I look forward to the continued success of Alberta’s Kindergarten to Grade 12 education system in providing high-quality education to students in the 2011/2012 school year.
