Warburg CALM Babies

The Warburg School Grade 10 Career & Life Manage-ment students are getting a hands-on experience of the energy, patience and costs associated with raising a child, and more specifically, a baby. Each student acts as a parent (caregiver) for these very expensive dolls. The dolls are valued at $2000 and monitor the caregivers’ attention to details such as feeding, changing, comfort-ing and generally loving each of their babies. The experiment runs over a three day period so there are lots of tired Grade 10’s at Warburg that are awakened throughout the night, tending to the needs of their babies. The project is letting these teenagers better understand the total costs and commitments involved in teen pregnancy. 100% of the students participating indicate that they are not prepared at this point in their life to accept this commitment. Teacher Ben Hyson states, "This has been a very successful experiment in parenting. Most kids thought it was easy and within their ability to care for a child without many changes in their life. They have all changed their minds and better understand what it will take to be a parent in the future."
