School Division Overview
On January 1, 1995, the former Leduc School District No. 297, County of Leduc No. 25 and the Devon School District No. 492 amalgamated through regionalization to become Black Gold Regional Division No. 18. In 2019, a ministerial order changed the name to the Black Gold School Division (BGSD).
The Division extends from the New Sarepta area to the East, to the Warburg area to the West. It includes the municipalities of Beaumont, Calmar, Devon, Leduc, Leduc County, Thorsby and Warburg. Our jurisdiction borders the South boundary of the City of Edmonton and encompasses the entire Leduc County. By student population, Black Gold School Division is the seventh largest division in the province and is expected to continue to experience growth.
Approximately 12,250 students from Early Childhood Services (ECS) to Grade 12 are educated in the 31 schools within the system. Approximately 660 teachers deliver quality instruction with assistance from 630 support staff. An extensive range of programs, including French Immersion, Band and Choral Music, Fine Arts, Outreach for Pregnant and Parenting Teens (OPPT), Off-Campus Education, Dual Credit courses, extensive Career and Technology Studies (CTS) and Career and Technology Foundation courses (CTF), are offered to students. In addition, we started a new Virtual Learning Program in 2020-2021 and are supporting approximately 1600 students in At-Home-Learning through Distance Learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Division Office is located in the County Centre, 3rd floor, 1105 5th Street, Nisku – East of the Edmonton International Airport.
Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees consists of seven elected officials:
- Ward One elects one trustee from the area that encompasses the Village of Thorsby, Village of Warburg and surrounding areas
- Ward Two elects one Trustee from the Town of Calmar, Town of Devon and surrounding areas.
- Ward Three elects three trustees from the City of Leduc and surrounding area.
- Ward Four elects two Trustees from the City of Beaumont, the former village of New Sarepta and surrounding areas.
The Board of Trustees and its employees are committed to and actively involved in joint decision-making and a collaborative approach to system operation and policy development. Stakeholder groups are actively involved in the operation of the jurisdiction. Schools in the system have school councils where parents work as partners in education with The Black Gold School Division.
