On Friday, September 14, 2018, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18 (BGRD) hosted its annual Welcome Back & Long Service Awards Ceremony. More than 750 Division staff gathered at Leduc Composite High School to officially kick off the school year and celebrate staff’s contributions and service achievements.

The ceremony was emceed by Liam Bolton and Madeleine Dufour, two École Leduc Junior High School students. In recognizing the impact of all BGRD staff members, the pair shared a quote from Lon Watters: “school is a building which has four walls with tomorrow inside.” The students thanked staff for making schools better places for the “tomorrow” that’s inside.

The Division’s Superintendent, Dr. Norman Yanitski, and Board Chair, Barb Martinson, also took to the podium with messages of thanks and inspiration for the staff.

The awards portion of the event included the annual presentation to support staff retirees and employees who hit 25, 30 and 40 years of service milestones in the past year. And, a pair of awards were presented to BGRD staff who have made an impact in their respective roles: the Inspiring Success Award of Distinction and the Superintendent’s Service Award of Excellence. Recipients are chosen based on the submissions of their peers. This year’s recipient of the Board of Trustees’ Inspiring Success Award of Distinction is Deb Schmidt, a Learning Support Teacher at West Haven Public School in Leduc. Schmidt was nominated by her peers for her dedication to supporting students and staff in her role.

Wieslaw and Zofia Klimaszewski were named recipients of the Superintendent’s Service Award of Excellence. The two are custodians at École J.E. Lapointe School in Beaumont and were recognized for their commitment to excellence in their work.

The event closed out with a performance by the Black Gold House Band, made up of several BGRD staff members. They covered Bryan Adams’ hit song “Summer of ‘69”.

The Welcome Back & Long Service Awards Ceremony is followed up annually by a Professional Development Day for teachers and support staff in the afternoon.
