Black Gold Regional Division No. 18 (BGRD) hosted the groundbreaking of the newest school in Leduc on May 28, 2015. The event celebrated the beginning of the construction phase of the 5,104 m2 grade K – 9 school which is located at 325 West Haven Drive in Leduc, Alberta.  West Haven Public School is scheduled to open September 2016 with a student capacity of 500, and a future capacity of 700.

The ceremony included welcome messages from Dr. Norman Yanitski (Superintendent of Schools, Black Gold Regional Division No.18) as well celebratory messages were provided by Mrs. Johnette Lemke (Board Chair, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18), Mr. Shaye Anderson (MLA-elect, Leduc-Beaumont) and His Worship, Greg Krischke (Mayor of City of Leduc).

The new school, designed by BR2 Architecture and ACI Architects Inc., is being constructed by Graham Group Ltd. and will also have four modulars. The much anticipated school was first requested in BGRD’s 2006 capital plan submission and was supported by the significant economic growth in Leduc and projected student enrolment numbers.  Growing at an exponential rate, the City of Leduc, had a significant need for new schools. In May 2013, it was announced that BGRD had been granted approval, from the Government of Alberta, for construction of West Haven Public School.

“Collaborating, we have developed an innovative plan for an inclusive school dedicated to inspiring success in every student. West Haven Public School is Black Gold Regional Division No. 18’s (BGRD) newest grade K – 9 school that will educate and inspire success in students for generations to come,” said Board Chair, Johnette Lemke. “Without the support from the Government of Alberta, their Education and Infrastructure Departments; City of Leduc; Graham Group Ltd.; BR2 Architecture; ACI Architects Inc.; and several other community players this day would not be possible. I am tremendously excited to welcome our first class of students in September 2016, who will have the opportunity to learn and have fun in this space.”

Students of Leduc Estates School, also participated in the ceremony by creating a special banner and giving a presentation to all those who attended.  The event concluded with an actual breaking of ground and festive cupcakes to make the celebration official.

The new school will further assist in amplifying the positive benefits of BGRD’s education program and provide an ideal supportive environment for student-focused learning to a growing population.
