Thorsby Junior Senior High School Principal Jon Ganton will take on a new role as Division Principal in September 2021.

Black Gold School Division (BGSD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jon Ganton as our new Division Principal, effective September 2021.

The Division Principal is a supportive role to school administrators in a variety of forms, and acts as the Off-Campus Lead, participates in the Division Administrative Command Team, and supports the superintendents and directors on various initiatives within the Division. The Division Principal reports to the Superintendent of Schools.

“I want to thank all of the worthy candidates who took the time to prepare and apply for this critical position,” said Superintendent of Schools Bill Romanchuk. “I am excited to welcome Jon to this role, as he has proven to be an inspirational and innovative leader who has the ability to bring people together through effective communication and foresight. We will be drawing upon his experience and expertise to move the Division forward.”

Jon has been employed with the Division for the past 13 years at three different schools: first at John Maland High School where he covered teacher leaves; then a five-year stint at New Sarepta Community High School as the Math and Science Department Head, and Athletic Director; and for the past six years as the Principal of Thorsby Junior Senior High School.

“I’d like to thank the Black Gold Senior Administration for giving me this opportunity to work closely with all of the schools in Black Gold family,” said Jon Ganton. “I look forward to this new chapter in my career, and am excited to contribute to the success of our staff and students.”

Jon’s journey with Black Gold began at an early age. He was five years old when he started attending Robina Baker Elementary School in Devon, and he graduated 13 years later from John Maland High School. Jon went on to complete his B.Ed degree at the University of Alberta in 2006.  As a part of his program he worked in both the Edmonton Public and BGSD school systems.

Jon is married to the love of his life, Bethany, and they have three beautiful children. During the summer months the Ganton family enjoys spending time at their local park, playing baseball and soccer, and camping.  When the cold weather hits, Jon enjoys playing hockey and coaching his son’s team, and spending evenings at the outdoor rink with his family.
