The nominees for this year’s Superintendent’s Service Award of Excellence include Tanya Babcook, a Grade 3/4 combined Home Room teacher at Warburg School.

Tanya’s commitment to her and the Black Gold School Division exceed all expectations. “Her overarching priority is the success of her students,” said Leanne Tessier, who co-nominated Tanya. “She gets to know each of them personally – the education assistants in her classroom constantly praise her for this – and works on building on their strengths and improving weaknesses.”

“As a teacher and member of our staff, Tanya promotes wellness,” said Warburg School Principal Wendy Maltais. “Her classroom is a safe, positive, healthy environment, encouraging and engaging her students to be successful academically and socially. Even through the pandemic and virtual classes, her students reached out and continued their learning; they all loved her!”

Tanya is quick to fill the gaps for supervision coverages and volunteer positions (volleyball coach, track meets, the Terry Fox Walk, dance supervisor). She has offered her home for staff gatherings, her personal bbq for fundraisers, and her trailer for functions such as grad and parades. A surprise sticky note with words of praise or encouragement given by her definitely boosts the recipient’s spirits!

Tanya has demonstrated commitment to the Division by providing service beyond the requirements. She has contributed to Black Gold’s goal of identifying and bridging the learning gaps caused by loss of learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She currently leads Warburg School as an instructional support teacher for numeracy, coordinating services and interventions for student academic and behavior plans. This position is over and above her current workload.

Tanya is also giving of her time and talents to enrich her school and community. “Most recently, a Korean family new to Canada and to our small village were treated to a horseback ride and trampoline fun at the Babcook home,” said co-nominator Angie Hodges. ”Tanya goes to great lengths to provide an inclusive, welcoming environment for everyone. She truly is a bright light at Warburg School.”
