  • Board Statement: National Indigenous History Month

Posted on    Posted in Board, Featured, General

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada – a time to recognize the achievements, cultures, and complex history of Indigenous Peoples. The Black Gold School Division Board of Trustees is proud to celebrate and honour the diverse cultures, customs, and languages of Indigenous peoples across our country and within our school community.

Throughout the year, our schools have delicately woven the distinct histories of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, into their programming; honouring Indigenous languages and stories, and recognizing their many contributions, both past and present. We recognize there is still much work to be done to fully address the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and are committed to ongoing awareness, understanding, and appreciation of our Indigenous peoples.

Only by learning about Indigenous history, however painful it may be, can we can come to understand and help dismantle the structures of systemic racism, inequality, and discrimination that our First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities still face, and work together to build a more just, more equitable society for all Canadians.
