Every year, the Board of Trustees donates to Legion branches within the Black Gold’s catchment area to support the vital work their members do to advocate for and serve veterans and their families, and to help Canadians honour and remember the courage and sacrifices of the men and women who served, and those who still serve and protect our nation.
This year, we were honoured to have the Royal Canadian Legion Calmar Branch No. 266 President Bob McKerrachor, Warrant Officer (retired), join us at the October 30 Regular Board Meeting to present Board Chair Esther Eckert with the first poppy.
“This small but powerful symbol serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Canada’s Veterans and the enduring legacy they have left for all of us,” said Board Chair Esther Eckert. “Wearing the poppy is more than a gesture; it is a moment to pause, to remember, and to teach our young people about the value of sacrifice, resilience, and peace.”
The importance of Remembrance in our schools cannot be overstated. For our students, learning about the history and meaning behind the poppy connects them to Canada’s past and helps them understand the rights and freedoms they enjoy today.
Students are reminded of the courage, commitment and sacrifice of those who served, as well as our ongoing responsibility to uphold peace, justice, and kindness around the world.
The support of our Legion members—in school-based ceremonies, poppy distribution, and sharing stories and experiences with our youth—provides invaluable lessons that go beyond the classroom. They help us instill a sense of gratitude, respect, national pride and civic responsibility in the next generation.
The Division is deeply grateful to all our local Legion branches for their dedication to keeping this tradition alive.
