Black Gold School Division is excited to be building a new state-of-the-art Grade 10-12 high school in south-west Leduc this spring, and we need the public’s help in naming the school!

Members of the public are encouraged to go to Black Gold School Division website and click on the Let’s Connect! Tab, register and submit their ideas for appropriate school names. Be sure to include any relevant background information to support the name(s) you suggest.

“We are thrilled to be moving forward with this new Leduc high school project, which will provide much-needed learning space in fast-growing Leduc,” said Board Chair Devonna Klaassen. “This is an important educational investment that will make its mark on this community for decades to come, and is deserving of a name that will reflect and uphold its legacy.”

“I am pleased to say that this modern, bright and airy school will feature new and increased programming options for Leduc-area students,” said Superintendent of Schools Bill Romanchuk. “The facility will feature an industrial/commercial kitchen for a culinary arts program, dedicated spaces for robotics, 3D printing and design/merchandising, video broadcasting and production, and horticultural/agricultural studies. There will be an art kiln for the ceramics program, and an outdoor classroom.”

The new high school is set to open in the fall of 2024 with capacity for 1,121 students initially. There are plans in place to expand the school and gymnasium to a future capacity of 1,600 students, when needed.

“Our current high school, Leduc Composite High School, is in great shape and has a long and storied history of excellence in the academics, arts, athletics, and community service,” said Superintendent Romanchuk. “We expect it will remain open for many more years and no doubt provide a dynamic cross-town rivalry with the new school.”

A School Naming Committee has been set up to receive nominations from the public for the school from January 10 until February 10, 2022. The Committee will then narrow down the submissions to a shortlist of names to recommend to the Board of Trustees. The Board will announce the name for the new high school on March 13, 2022, and the winning submission will receive a Black Gold Prize Pack.
