Black Gold Regional Schools hosts Student Leadership Symposium- Momentum: Choosing Wellness
Black Gold Regional Schools (BGRS) continues to engage youth through various Division wide opportunities. On Thursday, November 6, 2014, a total of 140 students, teachers and parents from Black Gold schools will attend the BGRS Student Leadership Symposium at the Leduc Recreation Centre. This is the second BGRS initiated student leadership event to occur within the last three years. With an eye towards understanding and addressing wellness across all curriculum, the goal for this symposium is to bring about a culture where parents, teachers and students value and practice active living, healthy eating, and positive social environments throughout the student learning process. By recognizing how health and wellness impact learning, members of the school community will individually and collectively experience and embrace positive changes that will improve students’ educational outcomes and wellbeing.
Students will have the opportunity to listen to keynote speakers; Dr. Doug Gleddie, a professor from the University of Alberta who encourages active living and Bill Gordon who will speak about the power of kindness. Students will also have the opportunity to attend breakout sessions that provide a variety of age appropriate topics. The topics include titles such as: Relieving Toxic Stress, How to Create a Flash Mob, Move and Play Through Physical Literacy, Healthy Relationships and Restorative Practices, Healthy Eating and the Media and Embracing Student Voice with Wellness Education.
BGRS would like to thank the organizing committee, volunteers, staff and our community partners for supporting this event. Community partners include: Community, Attachment and Purpose (CAP) Project, The City and County of Leduc and the Alberta Healthy School Community Wellness Fund. BGRS would also like to thank all of the student and teacher volunteers who will either help run the event or lead breakout sessions.

Black Gold Regional Division No.18 is located directly south of Edmonton, extending from the New Sarepta area in the east, to the Warburg area in the west. It includes the municipalities of Beaumont, Devon, Thorsby, Calmar, and Leduc.
