Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Facilities, coordinate the maintenance functions of the facilities department and supervise the maintenance personnel, including all maintenance and mechanical/electrical staff. Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, coordinate/supervise/inspect maintenance projects and minor renovations.

Duties

  • Coach, evaluate, and monitor the progress of staff on a regular and proactive basis; motivate and mentor staff; establish team goals and outline performance indicators.
  • Recommend the hire and release of staff; provide job offers and regrets; develop opportunities for staff cross-training and personal growth; succession planning. 
  • Responsible for maintenance personnel deployment.
  • Meet with the Maintenance Lead Hand weekly to discuss work orders, work load and employee performance. 
  • View on-line the status of the assigned jobs, meet weekly with staff and perform periodic site visits to inspect the work performed.  Together with the Director of Facilities, hold monthly Toolbox Meetings with all maintenance staff. 
  • Interview and hire of temporary summer staff.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, manage client requested renovations and maintenance projects.
  • Receive and review all client requested work and distribute appropriately.
  • Review all documents and contracts for completion; confirm construction costs, including man hour costs for in-house work, are accurate.
  • Price tendering and procurement of materials used within the maintenance department.
  • Track and record material costs as per job/work order.
  • Develop and evaluate comprehensive preventative maintenance plans for all division facilities and equipment.
  • Conduct regular inspections and assessments to identify potential maintenance issues and address them proactively.
  • Maintain accurate records of all assets, including their condition, maintenance history, and lifecycle status.
  • Oversee the control and abatement of hazardous materials in schools and buildings, ensuring a safe environment for all occupants and workers.
  • Oversee the timely maintenance and safety of all maintenance vehicles within the BGSD fleet.
  • Ensure that vehicles are repaired and kept in good working order.
  • Participate in the department's and Division's short- and long-term strategic planning activities.
  • Provide input on infrastructure needs and priorities, ensuring alignment with Division goals and objectives.
  • Maintain technical knowledge through professional development activities to support strategic planning efforts.

Qualifications

  • Excellent written, communication, coaching, and reporting skills.
  • Positive attitude that models a culture of engagement, respect, and integrity.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and recordkeeping. Strong negotiation, analytical, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Advanced time management skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Post-secondary education in a related field or a building trades certification is an asset.
  • A minimum of (5) five years of managerial experience in a building maintenance related setting; however, candidates with equivalent education, experience, and professional certifications will also be considered.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, structural, and mechanical infrastructure.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance and asset management is an asset.
  • Previous experience in P3 operations will be considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of maintenance principles, practices, and projects.
  • Familiarity with financial policies and procedures, public tender processes, and contract law.
  • Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation Board, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) legislation, acts, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and awareness of Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

Hours & Compensation

  • Start date: to be determined
  • Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM (Note: hours may vary and be irregular and are those hours normally required to meet the objectives of the position.
  • Salary: Pay level 8 ($85,065 - $111,897)
