Black Gold School Division welcomes 33 new teachers
Black Gold School Division is welcoming 33 teachers to the division this year so far - including a majority who are new to the profession and some who are experienced teachers and new to Black Gold.
All were invited to participate in a new teacher onboarding workshop on August 24 at Black Gold’s Division office.
“The purpose of the day is to ensure new teachers know what supports are available to them in their teaching journey in our division,” says Pam Verhoeff, Division Wellness Lead Teacher. “As we welcome them, we want them to know they have people and resources available to help them. Paired with the skills and knowledge they bring with them, they are prepared for a successful year with their students.”
Topics of the day included an overview of Black Gold’s core values and priorities, Employee Resource Groups, wellness resources, Indigenous learning, Artificial Intelligence in the classroom, and curriculum. The Superintendent and Board Chair extended their welcome to the group, as well as local ATA (Alberta Teachers’ Association) leadership, a group of Principals, and the Student Services team.
“Providing this opportunity is all about ensuring a smooth transition for our new teachers, and supporting their success with students,” says Raymond Cable, Associate Superintendent.
"As I think back to my first years of teaching, I remember the hope and excitement I had about working with students. I felt that in our session today. Bringing in new staff with their enthusiasm and ideas, definitely elevates our division,” says Cable.
“We extend a big welcome to these individuals,” says Michael Borgfjord, Superintendent. “We are pleased to have them join Black Gold and start their journey with us in this way. Our division is highly collaborative; we prioritize relationships and partnerships. The onboarding day was all about collaboration, and we hope it helps our new teachers feel a deep sense of welcome.”
In addition to today’s onboarding session, new teachers have access to one-on-one new teacher coach opportunities, instructional coach supports, and New Teacher webinars to help with any questions.
New this year is a second onboarding workshop in February, for any new teachers hired after August 24.
