Community comes together to build new Linsford Park playground
After years of fundraising, planning and hard work, Linsford Park School officially slid into a new era of play this week, with the grand opening of its new playground.
Despite the snowy weather, students, staff, families and community supporters gathered to celebrate the occasion… including a few turns on the new slides!
The playground has been in the works since 2019, when a group of LPS parents started fundraising to replace playground equipment that was getting close to the end of its life. Over the last two years the project has gained momentum, with additional fundraising by parents, and substantial grants from the Province of Alberta, and The City of Leduc. A group of about five families also contributed significant time and effort, and some of their businesses gave in-kind donations.
A big part of the project this fall was spreading the woodchips in place, which students, staff and parents all contributed to.
“Every Linsford Park student from Kindergarten to Grade 6 helped with that, and it makes the playground even more special,” says Kathy Kloschinsky, LPS Principal. “Having put in the effort has made the students even more excited about the new playground equipment. They are constantly talking about it, and they’ve been loving playing on it.”
Kloschinsky says all of the students have had a chance to enjoy the playground during their physical education classes, so that they have an increased level of access. She says students especially appreciate the equipment that spins, which is a new element for the school. The triple slide is also a popular feature.
