Puck drops on Leduc Hockey Academy’s inaugural season

The starting whistle has sounded and the puck has dropped, officially kicking off the new Leduc Hockey Academy (LHA). The program is new this year for students attending Caledonia Park School (CPS).

“Caledonia Park is excited to be the host, and we’re excited for the students and the community to come on the journey with us,” says Donavin Simmons, Principal of CPS.

There are 38 Grades 5 to 7 students enrolled in LHA. They practice and train at the Leduc Recreation Centre on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, during their option period.

LHA runs as a partnership between CPS and Serdachny Power Skating and Hockey, an Edmonton-based company, to provide expert skill instruction. Serdachny’s National Hockey League background brings a depth of experience to the rink.

“Previously, kids who play hockey in the community didn’t have a hockey academy option, and the idea of increased skill development is a big motivator,” says Simmons.

Simmons says the program will also give students a movement break in the day, and he anticipates having hockey to look forward to will impact the way students feel about school in general.  

One student says, “Every time I wake up on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I am excited to go play hockey.”

Students are also looking forward to honing their skills and the chance to make friends.

“What I’m excited about this year is Serdachny coming and helping me get better and better as it goes on,” says one student.

“Getting to know everyone and just training,” anticipates another student.

“Probably the drills and if we play scrimmages,”  says another.

A possible expansion for LHA to Grades 8 through 9 is being explored.
