Update Regarding ATA Labour Action - September 10
Dear Parents/Guardians,
This morning (September 10, 2025), the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) announced that teachers will begin job action on October 6, 2025, if a new agreement is not reached with the province. At this time, no formal strike notice has been issued, and the specific form that job action might take has not been shared.
What’s Next?
- For now, schools remain open; it is business as usual at Black Gold School Division (BGSD)
- Parents/guardians are encouraged to begin planning for childcare in the event of labour action.
- At any time during this process, an agreement may be reached between the provincial government, specifically the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), and the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA).
Understanding the Process
- The ATA is the professional organization representing teachers across Alberta.
- TEBA represents school boards in provincial collective bargaining for all Alberta’s public, separate, and francophone teachers.
- BGSD is not directly involved at this stage of negotiations. Bargaining between TEBA and the ATA occurs at the provincial level.
Possible Outcomes
If the ATA moves forward with job action, this could take different forms, including:
- Work-to-rule
- Rotating strikes
- A full strike
Staying Informed
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide timely updates to students, staff, and families as new information becomes available. Thank you for your ongoing support and understanding.
For more information, please continue to monitor your emails and the school division’s website.
Black Gold School Division values its teachers and is hopeful that a resolution will be found.
