Willow Park student receives provincial Honouring Spirit Indigenous Student Award
Congratulations to Marissa - a student from Willow Park School. This week Marissa received one of 12 provincial Honouring Spirit Indigenous Student awards, from the Alberta School Boards Association.
One of the highest honours for many Indigenous communities is to be presented with, and wrapped in, a star blanket. Marissa received her unique star blanket the ceremony in Edmonton on April 20.
Alberta Lieutenant Governor, Salma Lakhani, was in attendance, as well as the Hoourable Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Indigenous Relations, and Elders Charlie Fox and Theresa Strawberry.
Marissa is known as a leader in her school, living and sharing her Métis heritage with authenticity and joy. Marissa has taken the initiative to share her culture with her peers through presentations that include traditional knowledge, visuals, and dancing, and answering their questions. Marissa also performed a jig for the entire school, helping to build cultural understanding.
Thanks to Marissa for her contributions to our school community!
