ESBCHS black fashion show 1

Students and staff at École Secondaire Beaumont Composite High School celebrated Black History Month in a unique and engaging way this week. Students and staff participated in a black fashion show.

Sylvia T., a Grade 12, says, “The models were all dressed beautifully. I really liked that it  showed cultural appreciation for them. I learned that their culture is absolutely amazing.”

“The fashion show idea started with our Grade 12 students who were asking what we would do to celebrate and learn more about black culture during Black History Month,” says Katie DeBoer, ESBCHS teacher. DeBoer says the school partnered with the Black Impact Alliance Foundation in Beaumont and Dr. Cheryl Okoli, a local volunteer, to develop the idea of the fashion show together.

The collaboration with Black Impact Alliance also resulted in connections to find the clothing items that would be displayed. “It was really overwhelming how collaborative and generous they, and members of our community, have been,” says DeBoer. “It was inspiring to connect in this way.”

“Our hope was that black students would see themselves represented,” says DeBoer. “We wanted to give space for everyone to be themselves. We wanted it to be a positive experience for all of our students. When we celebrate differences, it allows us to connect in a joyful way and that’s how we build a community.”

Taijha L., a Grade 11 student, who was a model in the fashion show says, “I think it was very inspiring. I think it helped really embrace the history and how important it is to honour the black culture in our school.”
