Black Gold named Justin Klaassen as Ohpaho Secondary School’s Principal for 2026-27
Black Gold School Division is pleased to share that it has appointed Justin Klaassen as the new Principal of Ohpaho Secondary School starting in September 2026.
Klaassen will be transferred to Ohpaho after having served as Principal of Calmar Secondary Collegiate School for the last two years. Prior to that Klaassen was the Principal of Riverview Middle School in Devon, and Thorsby Jr./ Sr. High School. Klaassen was also the Assistant Principal and a teacher at West Haven Public School in Leduc, and a teacher at Thorsby School. Klaassen has been an educator in Black Gold for more than 20 years.
“Justin’s long history in Black Gold and his experience working in new schools and with students in Grades 7 to 12 will be an asset as he moves into this new role,” says Ray Cable, Associate Superintendent, Black Gold School Division. “His deep knowledge of growing a school from the ground up and building culture, along with his commitment to Indigenous culture, makes him well suited for this position.”
“I have really enjoyed being at Calmar Secondary,” says Klaassen. “Having the opportunity to develop the Collegiate in response to local and divisional needs has been amazing. I also love the small town feeling here, and the great mix of academics, sports and fine arts that we offer. Being welcomed into a passionate community that strives to maintain its feeling of family has been an amazing gift.”
“Looking ahead to Ohpaho, I am eager to focus on what students need to be successful. That’s the center of the work. It will be an opportunity to continue to write the first few pages on the journey at a dynamic new school,” says Klaassen. “I am looking forward to working collaboratively with staff, students, families, and the community to continue to define and build the school’s culture.”
