Ohpaho Principal Dan Lake recognized for leadership rooted in relationships
Ohpaho Secondary School Principal Dan Lake has been recognized for his commitment to students, staff, and the school community, receiving a Distinguished Leadership Award from the Council for School Leadership, a specialist council of the Alberta Teachers’ Association.
The award recognizes school leaders who demonstrate exceptional leadership practices and make a lasting impact on students, staff, and their communities. Lake was honoured during a provincial awards ceremony earlier this month.
Michael Borgfjord, Superintendent of Black Gold School Division, says, “On behalf of Black Gold - a huge congratulations to Dan!”
“Dan is an amazing leader who consistently goes above and beyond to support staff and students! Black Gold has been fortunate to have his energy and enthusiasm for learning,” says Borgfjord.
As the first principal of Ohpaho Secondary School, he helped build a school culture where students feel supported, staff feel valued, and everyone is encouraged to do their best. The nomination was submitted by OSS teacher Justin Gabinet, who has worked with Lake for the past two years.
Gabinet describes Lake as a leader who takes time to connect with students, support staff, and foster a welcoming school culture. He noted that even difficult conversations with students are approached with compassion, dignity, and accountability.
“Students know they will be heard, and that their principal cares deeply about their growth—not just as learners, but as young people,” wrote Gabinet in his nomination.
“I am honoured to receive this award,” says Lake. “The work required to open a new school cannot be attributed to any one person. I am grateful to be part of the Ohpaho team and for the opportunity to serve alongside such dedicated people. This recognition is a reflection of their commitment and has been an incredible culmination of my career with Black Gold School Division.”
Lake’s impact extends beyond students. Gabinet highlighted the way he checks in with staff, celebrates successes, and supports colleagues through challenges, helping create a strong sense of belonging throughout the school community.
Lake has served in school leadership roles for more than two decades and is completing his second year as principal of Ohpaho Secondary School.
For Black Gold School Division, the award is a reflection of the positive culture Lake has helped create at Ohpaho since the school opened its doors. Through his focus on relationships, community building, and supporting others, Lake has helped shape a learning environment where students and staff can thrive.
