Black Gold students' artistic talents shine at Leduc Art Club Showcase
Several Black Gold students showcased their work in the Aspiring Young Artist Competition hosted by the Leduc Art Club this month.
The competition provides local student artists with the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and share their work with the broader community.
Black Gold School Division has an ongoing partnership with the Leduc Art Club to select up to three student works that will be displayed in the BGSD Permanent Collection. Black Gold School Board Trustees Devonna Klaassen and Natasha Warnock served as judges for the permanent collection prize this year, and three Black Gold students were selected as winners in their respective grade categories. In addition, the Leduc Art Club honoured several of the artists.
Speaking of the Black Gold selections, Klaassen says, “While we could only pick three, there were several pieces that captured our attention, and all revealed just how appreciative we are that our students are exposed to art, guided in various techniques,” Klassen says. “We more than once commented on what a gift art is and how important it is to support learning and have the opportunity to use art as an outlet and form of expression.”
In the Grade 10 category, Fara Wood from Leduc Composite High School was recognized for her artwork titled The Sheep. Wood described her art as “a piece of work where I wanted to capture the weird and wild innocence that protrudes from lambs and sheep, and the peace they symbolize.” Klaassen says what stood out to her in the piece was the detail in the sheep’s coat. “The farm girl in me just couldn’t resist. I caught myself scrunching my hands as I could literally feel the texture of the wool. It was such realistic detail.”
Madalyn Hutzul, from Ohapho Secondary School, was recognized in the Grade 11 category for her photography, with a piece titled Listen. Klaassen says, “it made us smile, and we had a lengthy conversation about the piece as we observed the season, the animal, and imagined what the rest of the pictures would look like if you zoomed out.”
Also from Leduc Composite, Sharlaine Amit was recognized in the Grade 12 category for her artwork titled Sunday Morning. Amit described her piece as “a peaceful morning.” Klaassen says she and Warnock observed that the art “makes you linger, imagining the scenario.” Klaassen adds, “Did someone just get up? Is the bed still warm? The sunlight is so inviting. I hope they’re grabbing a cup of tea and a book and tucking back in.”
All three of the works will be displayed within Black Gold Central Office in Nisku as part of the Division’s permanent art collection.
