National School Bus Safety Week (October 16– 22, 2022) is an active and evolving public education program, and an excellent way for parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators and other interested parties to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety.

The Black Gold School Division safely transports almost 3,600 students for both the Division and Saint Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic School Division on 78 bus routes to and from 31 schools, 181 days per year. As part of our commitment to safety, each year we work with Safely on Board to provide Kindergarten-Grade 1 students with interactive and hands on introduction to school bus safety rules and procedures.

While school buses are one of the safest ways to get to school, it is important for motorists, parents, caregivers and students to know how to keep children safe when they are on and around school buses.

    Poster Contest
During School Bus Safety Week, the Alberta Student Transportation Advisory Council hosts a school poster contest for students focusing on a new annual theme. This year’s focus is, “My Driver. My Hero.”

Elementary students (Kindergarten to Grade 6) across the province are challenged to design a poster with a positive approach to the yearly theme along with a School Bus included in the illustration. The winner will receive a gift card along with their poster framed for display. Their classroom will also be recognized with an award. For more information, visit https://astac.ca/safety-week/.
