Did you know that March 8-12 is Substitute Teachers’ Appreciation Week? Substitute teachers are vital to the ongoing success of Black Gold School Division, and even more so during the ongoing pandemic.

Substitute teachers are dedicated professionals who have the same daily responsibilities of instruction and care for students as regular teachers. They bring stability to the classroom as they cover for regular teachers when they are sick or engaged in professional development.

“Substitute teachers are an essential part of our Black Gold family,” said Board Chair Devonna Klaassen. “We are grateful to these dedicated individuals who ensure continuity of learning in our schools, even in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Maintaining continuity of learning has been an even greater challenge this year, and our BGSD supply teachers have taken on this challenge.”

“We recognize the added stress that comes with stepping into multiple different classrooms, especially during this pandemic year, as well as adjusting to all the health and safety protocols,” said Chair Klaassen. “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I sincerely thank all our substitute/supply teachers for their dedication to supporting our students, staff and schools, and for all they do to inspire success.”

Chris Kruk has been a substitute teacher for Black Gold Schools since September 2020.  Chris used to be the City of Beaumont’s Director of Childcare Services for many years. He always wanted to be a teacher so he decided to go back to school and finish his education degree.

“I love being a substitute teacher, as I get to see a wide range of grades and curriculum,” said Chris Kruk. “I look forward to building lasting relationships with students of all ages, and to working in different school environments.”

The Division currently has 171 substitute teachers and 40 part time teachers, who also sub on their days off.
