The 2020/21 Alberta Education Funding Framework has made many changes to the way funding is provided to school boards. As a result of these changes, Black Gold School Division has had to review its Pre-Kindergarten programs to ensure it can continue to provide the highest level of early intervention for its youngest learners.
The Division’s goals during this review were to:
- Ensure equitable and predictable access for all children who qualify for early intervention within the Division.
- Maintain small class size.
- Maintain a general 3-1 adult-child ratio and individual supports wherever needed for safety.
- Maintain access to Speech-Language, Occupational therapy, Physical therapy, and Psychology services for school staff and families to support programming.
- Keep children as close to their home school as possible.
In order to continue offering high-quality early intervention, the way programs are delivered must change. Therefore beginning in September 2020, all Black Gold School Division Pre-Kindergarden programs will only provide programming for children who qualify for Early Childhood Services (ECS) funding due to a delay or diagnosis. The Division will no longer be able to offer placements for typically developing children.
